Frueds developmental phases Anal, Oral and Phallic

  1. This is a hard stage for me to write about since I personally believe it is a quite sexist stage. Freud's theory that women develop "penis envy" and have ongoing inferiorities around not having a penis is complete bunk to me. Having had children who are now past this "stage" (boys) I do agree with the fixation on the genitals for pleasure. Regardless of my personal bias against this stage, here are the facts about the stage.

    Freud's phallic stage:

-Occurs between ages 3-6 years old
-Source of pleasure becomes focused on the genitals
-Children begin to learn the difference between boys and girls
-Freud believed that boys in this stage became sexually attracted to their mothers and fearful and jealous of their fathers.
-Freud did not believe that girls went through the same stage, later coined the Electra complex by later psychoanalysts.
-Instead Freud believed at this stage that girls develop penis envy. He also believe that women never fully resolve penis envy.
-boy child believes he will be punished by his father for his feelings towards his mother. Freud called this fear the castration complex.
-If a child is able to resolve the internal conflict with their same sex parent, they are ready to move onto the next developmental stage.
-If a child is unable to resolve the internal conflict, could result in sexual deviancies (either over-indulging or avoiding)

  2. Not sure where to post this, but here it is. I was assigned the anal phase of Freud's pscyhosexual development theory.
    -Occurs 18mos-3 years old
-Pleasure is derived from the act of excretion and the fact that the child created something (waste) on their own, as well as controlling their bladder and bowel movements.
-Conflict can occur internally because control previously came from outside of themselves.
-This stage is resolved when the child is successfully potty trained.
-The way parents potty train affects the child's personality development. For instance, a parent is permissive and easy on the child during potty training can end up with a child who has an "anal-expulsive" personality-as one explanation I read stated, "a messy, destructive or wasteful personality". Conversely, a parent who i severly strict during the potty training process (or start potty training to early)will have a child who is "anal-retentive" in personality, a child who is obssessive and "overly stringent".
-Parents who give the proper amount of encouragement and praise during the potty training process will be children who feel capable and give them a sense of accomplishment.

  3. I am so sorry as to the late entry of this blog. I do hope it is still helpful.

Freud’s model of psychosexual development included Oral, Anal, Phallic Latency, and Genital. Ironically I find that Freud believed that the infant/child experienced “anxiety” in relation to the defined erogenous zone.

The oral stage ranges from Birth to 1 year or in some literature it was stated to be 2 years of age. During this phase, the mouth is viewed as the erogenous zone. Specifically, the term oral fixation or oral craving pertains to this stage of development. The hallmark of this stage is the obsession of the infant with stimulation of the mouth. Freud described the child who was over fed as “overprotected” and the underfed child as “neglected”. If the child were underfed, by Freudian definition the outcome would be an adult attempting to manipulate others to fulfill their needs throughout their life. While the over stimulated infant would resist the prescribed “normal” stages of development therefore resisting independence and strive to remain dependent. Per Freud, the key to this stage is the timeframe of the infants being weaned off breastfeeding.

Adult manifested behaviors of inappropriate weaning may be defined as overeating, being overly talkative, smoking addictions, overindulging in sugar, chewing on straws or toothpicks, and even alcoholism. These are known as “oral dependant qualities”.

Many criticisms of this theory have been noted inclusive of the fact there are no cultural specific identifiers of practices pertaining to breastfeeding of infants considered within his theories. The author being a white male who derives his work of theories from his cultural lens may be unable to fully see cultural practices as a variable. So it has been said to be a narrow view of development but one accepted at the time due to strong white male privilege era in which it was developed.
